Travel from Nepal
Using International Cards from Nepal
A normal Nepal-issued domestic card does not automatically work for international travel.
Before departure, confirm whether your card is enabled and legally permitted for overseas transactions under your bank’s current foreign-exchange arrangement.
NRB guidance states that foreign-currency cards can be used outside India subject to the applicable rules, while India-compatible cards operate under separate INR arrangements.

In this guide
Before you travel, ask your bank
Is my card enabled internationally?
Which countries can I use it in?
What is my spending limit?
Can I withdraw cash?
What are the FX and ATM charges?
Do I need to inform the bank before travel?
What happens if the card is blocked abroad?
Debit, credit and prepaid travel arrangements
The correct option depends on your bank and foreign-exchange eligibility.
Do not advertise a specific product as universally available.
Keep a backup
Travel with more than one payment method when possible:
- authorised card;
- reasonable cash amount; and
- emergency backup access.
ATM withdrawals
Foreign ATMs can charge:
- local ATM fee;
- issuing-bank fee; and
- currency-conversion cost.
Dynamic currency conversion
When offered the choice to pay in NPR versus the local currency, understand the conversion rate before accepting.
The merchant’s conversion may not be the cheapest.
Security
Enable transaction alerts.
Never share OTPs.
Use official banking apps.
Contact your bank through verified numbers if the card is retained or blocked.
Common mistakes
- assuming the card works because it has Visa/Mastercard branding;
- travelling with only one card;
- ignoring daily limits;
- using unsecured public Wi-Fi for banking; and
- handing the card to unknown people.
