India Entry Requirements for Nepali Citizens

This guide provides independent travel information. Check current requirements for your passport, destination and transit route with the relevant government authority. That authority decides applications and entry. Nepal Meets World does not process applications or guarantee approval.

Short answer: Nepali citizens travelling to India directly across the Nepal–India border generally do not need an Indian visa.

India’s Ministry of Home Affairs confirms that a citizen of Nepal entering India by land or air over the Nepal or Bhutan border is exempt from passport/visa requirements subject to the applicable identity conditions.

Do Nepali citizens need an Indian visa?

For ordinary travel directly between Nepal and India, Nepali nationals are exempt from the normal visa requirement.

The Embassy of India in Kathmandu also states that Nepal and Bhutan nationals are exceptions to India’s general foreign-national visa requirement.

What identification should you carry?

Official Indian guidance lists recognised identity documents including a Nepalese passport, Nepalese citizenship certificate and specified voter identification for eligible Nepal-origin travel.

For air travel, carrying a valid passport or other clearly accepted official identity is the safest practical approach.

Check your airline’s document requirement before travelling because airline boarding checks can be more operationally specific than the border exemption itself.

Important exception: entering India from another country

The exemption has conditions.

Official Indian policy states that a Nepalese citizen entering India from a place other than Nepal or Bhutan must possess a passport, and additional visa rules can apply when arriving from specified countries.

This means a Nepal→India trip and, for example, a third-country→India trip should not automatically be treated as identical.

Requirements can differ by age and travel context.

Families should verify the exact identity document expected by the airline and immigration authority before departure.

Common mistakes

assuming no visa means no identification;
using an airline booking name that does not match the ID;
applying Nepal–India border rules to an itinerary arriving from another country; and
