Foreign Currency for International Travel from Nepal
Nepali citizens travelling abroad should obtain foreign currency through authorised channels and under the current Nepal Rastra Bank rules.
The permitted passport-facility amount has changed over time, and NRB has issued further amendments in 2026. Always check the latest applicable circular or your authorised bank before publishing or relying on a fixed limit.

Cash or card?
Use a combination where legally available.
Cash is useful for arrival and small transactions. A properly enabled international card can reduce the need to carry large cash amounts.
Exchange rates
NRB publishes daily reference exchange rates, while commercial banks may quote different open-market rates.
India is different
Nepal–India foreign-exchange and card arrangements differ from travel to other countries.
Do not apply the same “convertible foreign currency” instructions automatically to India.
Common mistakes
- relying on an old NRB limit;
- using unauthorised currency sellers;
- exchanging the entire trip budget into cash;
- forgetting receipts/documents;
- assuming every Nepali debit card works abroad.
